01 Brakes & rotors Most booked

Grinding, squealing, a pedal that sinks or a wheel that shudders when you slow down — brake work is the job we're called for most. We replace pads and rotors, service calipers, bleed lines and check the parking brake while we're in there.

  • Front and rear pad replacement, ceramic or semi-metallic
  • Rotors machined or replaced, depending on thickness
  • Caliper service, seized slider pins, hose inspection
  • Brake fluid flush and bleed

Typical driveway time: 1.5–3 hours per axle. We bring the jack, stands and torque wrench — you don't need a garage.

02 No-start & battery calls 24 hours

A car that won't crank at 6am or won't turn over in a plaza lot at midnight. We test the battery under load, check the alternator output and the starter draw, and clean up the terminals and grounds that cause half of all "dead battery" calls in the first place.

We scan the codes, then read live data — fuel trims, O2 sensor behaviour, misfire counts, sensor voltages — because a code tells you where to look, not what to replace. You get a plain-English explanation of what's actually wrong before anything gets ordered.

04 Oil, filters & routine maintenance

The unglamorous work that keeps a car out of the shop. Conventional, synthetic blend or full synthetic, whichever your owner's manual calls for, with the filter and drain plug washer replaced every time.

  • Spark plugs, wires and ignition coils

05 Suspension, steering & tires

Clunks over speed bumps, a shimmy at highway speed, a car that wanders or pulls. We get underneath and find the worn part instead of replacing everything in the assembly and hoping.

  • Control arms, ball joints, tie rod ends and sway bar links
  • Wheel bearings and hub assemblies
  • Tire rotation, seasonal changeover and flat repair

06 Cooling, heating & A/C

Overheating in August, no heat in January. Both are usually a thermostat, a water pump, a leaking hose or a blend door — all fixable in a driveway with the right tools and a bit of patience.

Selling a car in Ontario, or buying one that needs a safety certificate? We go through the full checklist — brakes, tires, lights, suspension, exhaust, structure — and tell you honestly what will and won't pass.

    You get a price range and a time window on the phone. No diagnostic fee surprises, no "we'll have to look at it" runaround.

    We come to the car

    Van, tools, parts and a jack that fits. Driveway, condo garage, workplace lot or shoulder — as long as it's safe to work, we'll work there.

    You see the old parts

    We show you what came off, explain what failed, and only then talk about anything else we noticed. Payment by card, e-transfer or cash.

05 — About

Twenty years of turning wrenches, now on wheels

Als Mobile Mechanics started the way most good trades do — one mechanic, one van, and a phone that kept ringing. After years in fixed shops around Scarborough, Al got tired of watching customers pay for a tow, a waiting room and a three-day turnaround for a job that takes two hours. So he put the shop in a van instead.

Today the van carries a full set of hand tools, a two-tonne jack and stands, an OBD-II scanner with live data, a brake lathe, a battery load tester and the usual consumables — filters, fluids, belts, pads and rotors for the makes we see most. If a job needs a lift or a specialty tool we don't carry, we'll say so up front rather than start something we can't finish in your driveway.

What we won't do is upsell you. If your brakes have another 20,000 km in them, you'll hear that. If the noise you're worried about is a $40 sway bar link, you'll hear that too. A lot of our work comes from people who were quoted something big elsewhere and wanted a second opinion first.

We work on all makes and models — Honda, Toyota, Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Mazda, Subaru, Volkswagen and the domestic trucks that keep Durham Region's trades moving. Older vehicles welcome; we're comfortable with the ones that don't have a screen in the dash.

06 — Questions

The things people ask before booking

A Do you need a garage or a driveway?

A flat, firm surface is all we need — a driveway, a parking spot, a quiet side street or a workplace lot. We can't work on soft ground, on a steep slope, or anywhere it isn't safe to put a car on stands. Condo underground garages are usually fine, but check with your building first.

B How much does a mobile call cost?

It depends on the job and the parts, so we quote on the phone before we drive out — you'll know the range before you commit to anything. There's no separate "come out and look at it" fee on top of a job you've approved. If we arrive and the diagnosis turns out to be something different, we tell you the new number before we touch a wrench.

C Can you get parts the same day?

For common wear items — pads, rotors, batteries, filters, belts, plugs, wheel bearings — yes, usually. We pick up from suppliers around Scarborough and Pickering on the way. Less common parts may need a day or two to arrive, and we'll tell you that before you book rather than after.

D What if the car can't be fixed on site?

Some jobs genuinely need a lift, a press or a dealer-level tool. When that happens we'll tell you honestly, explain what the shop will need to do, and you won't be charged for work we couldn't complete. We'd rather lose the job than take your money for a half-fix.

E Do you work on weekends and holidays?

We're on the phone 24 hours Monday through Saturday, and Sunday from 10am to 3pm. Holiday coverage varies — call and ask, and if we can't come out we'll tell you when we can.

F How do I pay?

Card, e-transfer or cash, whichever suits you, once the work is done and you've seen the old parts. Small fleet accounts can be invoiced monthly — call and ask for Al.
